shepherd's huts

RESTORATION, DESIGN & PRODUCTION

Originally developed as compact kitchen/diner-come-bedrooms for hardworking 19th & 20th Century shepherds, traditional Shepherd’s Huts were simple yet sturdy solutions for accommodation, storage and raising orphaned lambs. Made from corrugated iron and wood with a hinged stable door which could be positioned away from the wind, the huts had iron wheels so they could be moved with the flock. With a stove in one corner for warmth and cooking and a window on either side for a good view of wandering sheep (or watchful wolves) these little wheeled huts made surprisingly practical and comfortable spaces.

We’ve been charmed by plenty of these brilliantly characterful constructions, so restoring forgotten or floundering huts is now one of the Fourpenny Workshop’s specialities. We also build new huts from original designs, keeping to traditional methods and building techniques wherever possible - and the results are always wonderfully endearing. A restored or new Fourpenny Shepherd’s Hut makes a marvellous garden hideaway, office space or children’s playroom. Sturdy, cosy, simple to move around if you fancy a change of scene and a useful extra room to add to your home - What’s not to like?
